Federal updates regarding minimum wage for federal contractors and the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS-4212) report filing deadline, plus employment law updates for California, New Jersey and New York.

Minimum Wage for Federal Contractors

On September 15, 2017, the U.S. Department of Labor released the 2018 minimum wage rate for federal contractors as required by Executive Order 13658. Executive Order 13658 was signed by President Obama on February 12, 2014 and requires the Secretary of Labor to annually adjust the hourly minimum wage paid by contractors to workers performing work on covered federal contracts in accordance with the methodology set forth in the order. The secretary’s determination of the minimum wage rate also affects the minimum hourly cash wage that must be paid to tipped employees performing work on or in connection with covered contracts.

Effective January 1, 2018:

  • The minimum wage for workers performing work on or in connection with covered contracts will increase to $10.35 per hour.
  • The minimum cash wage that generally must be paid to tipped employees performing work on or in connection with covered contracts will increase to $7.25 per hour.

VETS-4212 Filing Deadline Extended by 45 Days

The Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) has announced that, in order to accommodate the needs of those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, federal contractors who file their VETS-4212 report by November 15, 2017 will not be cited for failure to file a timely report or failure to comply with federal regulations.
